Manchester United's newest signing may have already dealt 'serious blow' to rivals Liverpool

Manchester United are set to unveil Mason Mount after the midfielder underwent a medical at Carrington this week.

Manchester United are set to announce Mason Mount’s transfer, with Fabrizio Romano reporting his medical was successfully completed. The player has said his goodbyes to Chelsea.

Mount, 24, will become Manchester United’s first summer signing, and in doing so, he has already dealt a ‘serious blow’ to bitter rivals Liverpool.

It is an early victory for Erik ten Hag as he looks to extend the gap over the Europa League side, who finished eight points behind Manchester United last season.

Mason Mount chose Manchester United

When reports emerged in March that Mason Mount was unsettled at Chelsea and unlikely to sign a new contract, it was Liverpool who were said to be frontrunners.

Football.London reported in March that Liverpool were ‘seriously interested’ in luring Mason Mount to Anfield. Football Insider claimed a month later that Liverpool were ‘confident’ they led the race for Mount.

Then came Manchester United’s interest, with The Mail reporting in late May that the Red Devils planned a swoop for Mount.

A week later, The Telegraph reported Mount had agreed personal terms with Manchester United.

The newspaper reported: “Mount is also wanted by Liverpool and Arsenal and it would be a serious blow for Jürgen Klopp, in particular, if he joins United.”

And with that, the race was as good as won, with Mount making up his mind he wanted Manchester United.

Sky Sports’ Melissa Reddy reported Mount was ‘wowed’ by Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag, and the detailed analysis the Dutchman had paid to his game.

The Liverpool Echo had reported that Liverpool viewed Chelsea’s asking price as too high, however, a report from The Athletic claimed this was their valuation of Mount at £70-80 million.

Manchester United’s negotiators managed to bring this down to £55 million plus add-ons.

Liverpool have since had to shell out to spend £60 million on Dominik Szoboszlai, a talented player but one who is unproven in the Premier League.

Mount is an England international and Champions League winner, who provided the winning assist in 2021. Manchester United can put him back on the big stage, and this could have been another crucial factor in his decision to make the move to Old Trafford.
