Bruno Fernandes names his three toughest Premier League opponents, including ‘difficult’ Man City star

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has revealed that one “difficult” Manchester City star is among the three toughest Premier League players he has faced.

Fernandes has been widely hailed for his direct impact at Old Trafford since his sensational £47m transfer from Sporting CP in 2020.

The 28-year-old Portuguese midfielder received the captain’s armband last month after United manager Erik ten Hag stripped Harry Maguire of the captaincy.

Fernandes, who attracted interest from Saudi Arabia this summer, has scored an impressive 44 times and registered 32 assists in 124 Premier League appearances for United.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Saturday Social, Fernandes opened up about the “top players” in the Premier League and picked out City star Rodri as a “difficult” opponent.

“In the Premier League, you play against top players,” he said.

“[N’Golo] Kante was difficult, Rodri was difficult, Declan Rice was really difficult.

“Declan and Rodri were physically very similar, Kante more small but quick and sharp.

“But there are many players because we play in the best league in the world so you get to play against the best players.”

“Inspirational” Bruno Fernandes becomes United captain

Speaking ahead of United’s pre-season friendly defeat against Wrexham, Ten Hag revealed the main reasons behind his decision to award Fernandes the captain’s armband.

When asked about his decision, the United boss said (via Sportskeeda): “Why Bruno? He’s an inspirational leader, a lot of game understanding, a high standing in the team, he has a social connector, that’s why.”

Fernandes also insisted that he would not change his style or approach on the pitch after succeeding Maguire as United captain.

“The manager chose me because of what I was doing last season and the way he worked with me,” he said.

“I don’t see why I should change. You have to be as natural as you can. Sometimes I can be wrong and it is not in the best way, but there are big players in the dressing room.

“Everything I say to them is because I think they can do big things.”
