Done deal: Manchester United miss out on exciting talent as 20-year-old seals surprise transfer

Manchester United had been hotly tipped to seal a transfer deal for Japanese talent Zion Suzuki. Now he has made his next move.

One of the most left-field transfer rumours this summer came when Japanese outlet  Sponichi reported Manchester United were set to sign Zion Suzuki.

The 20-year-old goalkeeper played for Urawa Red Diamonds and had drawn attention for the way he plays out from the back, potentially making him an ideal deputy for new number one Andre Onana.

More recently, Sponichi reported Suzuki had turned down the chance to sign with Manchester United as he wants to play regular football, rather than be a reserve.

Zion Suzuki signs with European club

Zion Suzuki has now made the move to Europe, leaping Japan behind. He is heading to Belgium.

Suzuki has signed a deal with Sint-Truiden, who finished sixth in the Jupiler Pro League last season.

Sint-Truiden announced via their official website that Suzuki has signed a one year loan deal including a purchase option.

Manchester United’s interest was even referenced in their official announcement, noting: “The goalkeeper was quoted by transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano at Manchester United.”

Technical director Andre Pinto said: “Zion is an athletic goalkeeper with a lot of growth potential. We are therefore happy to have him on our team and look forward to his further development.”

Manchester United goalkeeper situation still fluid

Andre Onana is Manchester United’s clear number one, but there could be some movement in the back-up spots before the end of the transfer window.

Dean Henderson will surely leave, while Tom Heaton will probably stay as number two. The third goalkeeper spot is less clear.

Nathan Bishop has been sold to Sunderland, while Matej Kovar could stay, but there is also the option to send the talented young Czech out on loan, or even sell him to raise funds.

If that happens, United could be in the market for a more experienced back-up, or another young prospect, to provide cover.
