Fabrizio Romano says Manchester United linked playmaker has agreed £30m Napoli move

Gabri Veiga will not be joining Premier League giants Manchester United this month with Fabrizio Romano reporting that the Celtia Vigo star is on his way to Napoli for up to £30 million.

While a new midfielder is still a distinct possibility for Manchester United before September’s transfer deadline, the truth is that the Old Trafford shutters have long since closed as far as Gabri Veiga is concerned.

The top scoring midfielder in the whole of La Liga in 2022/23, AS reported back in February that the Red Devils had sent scouts to watch him in action for Celta Vigo. But while Sofyan Amrabat, Ryan Gravenberch and Amadou Onana remain on Erik ten Hag’s radar, it’s telling that reports linking United with Veiga went quiet once Mason Mount put pen to paper in the North West.

Manchester United will not sign Gabri Veiga

Veiga, who scored 11 goals and set up four more in Spain’s top flight last term, does his best work in the final third; breaking into the box and finishing in style, almost Paul Scholes-like. But with Mount now filling that ‘advanced eight’ role, United were never likely to go head-to-head with Serie A champions Napoli for Veiga’s signature.

“Gabri Veiga to Napoli, here we go!” Fabrizio Romano exclaims on Friday morning. “Verbal agreement reached.

“(Napoli will pay) 36 million euros with add-ons included to Celta Vigo for the talented Spanish midfielder; 30 million euros fixed fee plus 6 million euros in add-ons. Documents to be prepared and then time for medical tests.

“A top signing for Serie A.”

You can say that again.

A Napoli side who have retained the services of Victor Osimhen and Kvicha Kvaratskhelia will arguably go into the new campaign even stronger – from an attacking perspective at least – then they were under Luciano Spalletti during last season’s Scudetto-winning campaign.

Gabri Veiga leaves Celta Vigo for Napoli

“He is an attacking midfielder who scores goals. A good player,” Spanish football expert – and former Manchester United forward – Terry Gibson says on El Tel and Jon’s La Liga Weekly podcast.

“I think he needs to improve on his defensive responsibilities if he is going to be a midfield player. But when you’re on top, he’s got the ability to create and to score goals. If you’ve got the ball and you’re attacking, he’s a massive threat.

“He has clearly come to the attention of other big clubs around Europe because he’s a really talented player. There are a lot of really good young players in La Liga, and he is one of the best.”
