'Formal talks' underway over Manchester United whizkid exit, club want him permanently

Manchester United are in talks with Spanish side Granada over Alvaro Fernandez.

The 20-year-old left-back is wanted by the La Liga side Sky Sports report.

The talks centre on a season long loan move for Alvaro Fernandez, however, Granada want an option to sign him permanently.

Fernandez spent last season on loan in the Championship with Preston North End and won their young player of the season award.

Alvaro Fernandez loan expected

When Tyrell Malacia suffered an injury which ruled him out of pre-season, there were high hopes Alvaro Fernandez would stake a claim for a first team spot.

Fernandez did play in pre-season and had an assist against Wrexham, but he did not really do enough to force his way into the first team picture.

He did not make the bench for either of Manchester United’s opening Premier League games.

Granada rank in 20th place in La Liga after losing both of their opening games of the season.

United may not be ready to give up on Fernandez

While a loan move makes sense, Manchester United may not be ready to give up on the defender totally.

This is why we expect United to decline the inclusion of a permanent option, and make the move a straight loan, with no clauses.

Fernandez would then return to Carrington next summer and start again, to try and win Erik ten Hag’s favour in 2024.
