Manchester United keen on £50m attacking star, have spoken to him directly

Manchester United are reported to be keen on suspended Brentford striker Ivan Toney.

Ivan Toney is eligible to return to training for Brentford next month under terms of his suspension for betting offences.

The forward scored 20 goals in 33 Premier League games last season, and Football Transfers had reported in March that Brentford were ready to cash in on him for £50 million this summer.

Toney’s subsequent suspension has taken a transfer off the agenda, for now, and potentially crushed his value too. But not his talent or ambition.

‘Ivan Toney talks’

A fresh report from Football Transfers claim Manchester United have ‘held conversations’ directly with Ivan Toney.

The report claims Manchester United are considering a move for the forward in January.

United are said to recognise that there needs to be a viable alternative to Rasmus Hojlund in attack and believe Toney is worth waiting for.

The striker is proven in the Premier League, a good age at 27, has played alongside Christian Eriksen before, and could be available at a discount comparison to fee he was previously touted for.

Toney open to move

Toney this week named Manchester United as one of three Premier League clubs he admires, along with Liverpool and Arsenal.

Speaking to the Diary of a CEO podcast, he also made clear he is keen on testing himself at a higher level.

Toney said: “Everyone wants to play at the top of the tree. Not that Brentford aren’t there, but everyone wants to play for these big clubs and compete for trophies.”

It would be preferable to have Toney in the United side than on the opposing team for a top four rival. United’s interest is noteworthy, but it’s also a long way off coming to fruition, so this is just one to bear in mind, for now.
