Manchester United’s under-21 side played their first EFL Trophy game of the season last night and came out on top.
Manchester United’s under-21 side played away at Stockport County and drew the game 1-1.
Joe Hugill had set United on the way to victory before a late Stockport equaliser.
Under rules of the competition, the two sides contested a penalty shootout which United won 6-4, to gain an extra point for the group stages, which also features Bolton and Salford.

Elyh Harrison the star
As is so often the case with penalty shootouts, the goalkeeper emerged as the hero.
Elyh Harrison saved a penalty in Manchester United’s under-21 game against Leeds on Friday night and he ended up as the difference maker in the shootout.
Harrison’s quick footwork also saw a turn in his own penalty box do the rounds in a clip on social media, showing off his confidence.
He sent a message out on Instagram after the win, and was inundated with responses from teammates, plus former United stopper Nathan Bishop.

Stand out performers
Other strong performers included Willy Kambwala, who had one of his best games for the club since joining United back in 2020. The centre-back looked comfortable going up against senior players.
Pre-season star Dan Gore was also impressive in midfield as he continues to show his credentials. Ethan Wheatley scored the winning penalty.
Line-up: Harrison, Ogunneye, Kambwala, Aljofree, Nolan, Collyer, Gore, Oyedele, Mejia, Shoretire, Hugill
Subs: Mee, Jackson, McAllister, Mather, Williams, Wheatley, McNeill
Despite the shootout win, United are still searching for a first under-21 win of the season, with the result of this game a draw. The team had lost under-21 openers against Crystal Palace and Leeds.
The players left this match coming out on top, which will boost their confidence, and a first proper victory won’t be far off.
