'Best in Europe' claims over Manchester United star look ridiculous after latest defeat

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has recently starred for Scotland. For his club this weekend, it was a different matter.

A sixth minute goal for Scott McTominay in Scotland’s 3-0 win over Cyprus prompted lots of overreaction.

The punditry world subsequently tore into Manchester United. How could the midfielder possibly be left out at club level, when he is so prolific for his country?

Erik ten Hag did recall Scott McTominay for Manchester United’s weekend fixture with Brighton, and the results were not pretty.

McTominay struggles in Manchester United defeat

Just as he did in Manchester United’s loss against Brighton on the first day of last season, Scott McTominay struggled badly.

He completed only 15 passes in 85 minutes, a woefully low number for a midfield player on home turf.

He touched the ball only 22 times in total, and won a total of zero tackles.

The highlight of his contribution for Scotland was his ability to get on the scoresheet. But in United’s defeat, McTominay did not attempt a single shot.

Chris Sutton called McTominay ‘best in Europe’

This performance was a far cry from the player being talked up after his contribution for Scotland.

Pundit Chris Sutton had told The BBC: “Some people think he’s not good enough to play for Manchester United, that just depends how good you have to be to play for Manchester United at the moment. But even if he isn’t, he’s still one of the best midfielders in Europe.”

If Sutton is right, then McTominay did not show it against Brighton. A bigger stage awaits against Bayern Munich this week – but the midfielder could find himself back on the substitute’s bench.
