'It's good'... Erik ten Hag loved Manchester United star's comments after defeat and points out 'great' contribution

Erik ten Hag would have been disappointed in the manner in which Manchester United went 2-0 down so quickly in the first half of the clash against Bayern Munich.

The Dutch manager could be seen shaking his head when Serge Gnabry’s shot hit the back of the net to double the host’s advantage in the first half.

The incident that kicked it all off was the mistake made by United’s new goalkeeper Andre Onana. The former Inter Milan goalkeeper joined the club this summer and has had a rather underwhelming start to his United career.

Following the departure of David De Gea, Onana was tasked with replacing the Spaniard in the squad and adding some much-needed ball-playing abilities to the side but his shot-stopping, so far, has left much to be desired.

Erik ten Hag on Onana mistake

Following the full-time whistle in Munich, Ten Hag spoke to TNT Sports about the mistake made by the goalkeeper and indeed how well the goalkeeper has done since he joined the club.

“It’s good that Onana is taking responsibility (for the mistake), but it’s about a team, we bounce back as a team,” the manager said.

“He takes the responsibility + that shows personality. That personality he needs to get in higher levels. If there is one mistake, don’t make it bigger than it is. After his mistake, he made great saves in the second half, so he shows his capabilities.”

The harsh reality is that United were cut through so easily and far too often to get out of Germany with just a -1 on their goal difference is surely a positive in itself.

Defensive concerns

The ease in which Bayern were creating chances, particularly in the second half, is surely a cause for concern for the former Ajax boss.

A midfield three that was so consistent last season is now being cut open time and time again, and you wonder if this is due to the team’s low confidence.

Onana’s performances will be magnified because the facts are he is facing an incredibly high number of shots on his goal and he is being tested more. The goalkeeper certainly has the character and the self-belief to respond, starting with Burnley on Saturday.
