Nightmare for new Man Utd signing, his Euro 2024 qualifying hopes look over already

Manchester United defender Jonny Evans is reeling from back-to-back losses with Northern Ireland.

Days after clinching his emotional return to Manchester United on a one-year deal, there is suddenly very little for Jonny Evans to smile about.

He made his return on the pitch as a late substitute against Arsenal, in which United fell to a 3-1 loss, with Evans inadvertently deflecting Declan Rice’s shot for the Gunners’ decisive second goal.

Evans has played two games in recent days for Northern Ireland, recording two defeats.

Jonny Evans and Northern Ireland lose to Kazakhstan

Jonny Evans actually scored last Thursday night against Slovenia, but it was not enough. His Northern Ireland side fell to a 4-2 defeat.

Speaking after the game via The Mail, Evans admitted he had not played very well, commenting: “I didn’t think I played great myself. I know I got a goal, but my own personal performance probably wasn’t up to scratch.

“I’m experienced enough and wise enough to admit that. We can’t be giving away cheap goals at the start of the game like we did.”

Evans and Northern Ireland hoped to bounce back away at Kazakhstan on Sunday. Instead they slipped to a 1-0 defeat.

The 35-year-old played all 90 minutes, with Northern Ireland beaten by a 27th minute strike from the hosts.

Euro 2024 hopes look over

Qualifying for Euro 2024 already looks impossible for Northern Ireland. They have lost five of a possible six games, and rank fifth in their group, only ahead of San Marino.

They are seven points off fourth placed Slovenia, who have played one game fewer.

It is time for Northern Ireland to rebuild, and that will soon be without Evans.
