Ridiculous claims over Manchester United signing and £100m star lack perspective – Red Devils ace is better

Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund is ahead of where he should be at this very early stage of his career.

Last week was ‘pile on Manchester United week’ for TV and radio pundits as the team recorded a third straight loss. A win over Burnley has at least paused some of the negativity.

One of the more ludicrous takes was Sky Sports pundit Clinton Morrison telling the channel: “There’s no debate between him and Harry Kane, he’s miles ahead of [Rasmus] Hojlund.”

We weren’t aware there was a Kane v Hojlund debate. But while we are at it…

Rasmus Hojlund is ahead of Harry Kane

There are not any Manchester United fans debating 2023 Harry Kane versus Rasmus Hojlund. Nobody believes a player at the start of his career is a better player than the one in his prime.

Bayern Munich agreed a fee rising to £100 million for Kane, Sky reported, which would have been United’s almost entire net spend for the summer.

But let’s add a little perspective into the argument, and compare 20-year-old Rasmus Hojlund to 20-year-old Harry Kane.

At 20, Rasmus Hojlund is leading the line for Manchester United, he has scored in the Champions League for the club, and he has scored six goals at international level for his country.

Where was Harry Kane at 20? Well – a decade ago Harry Kane had just finished a spell on loan in the Championship at Leicester City.

Later that season he began to make his way into the Tottenham first team, with 10 Premier League appearances in 2013/14.

It was the following year he really made his breakthrough, when he was 21.

Kane has done superbly, incredibly, to become the striker he is today. And there is no guarantee Rasmus Hojlund will enjoy the same success.

But let’s give him the chance to do so shall we?

Right now Hojlund is ahead of Kane. And that should be noted by the pundits.

Hojlund criticism unfair and not surprising

Criticism of Hojlund for the player he is not, highly unfair at this early stage of his career. It’s like Sky’s determination to compare him to Erling Haaland before he signed. The City star is an outlier, setting stupendous numbers that it is ridiculous to hold any young player to that standard.

Let’s just enjoy Hojlund for who he is, a promising young striker who at this point, has made three Premier League appearances.

He has done incredibly well to get to Manchester United at 20. Now he sits at the bottom of the mountain, having travelled a long journey to get here. Let’s give him the opportunity to climb it.
