Ten Hag claims surprise reason Jadon Sancho missing from squad v Arsenal

Erik ten Hag has provided an update around the bizarre absence of Man United forward Jadon Sancho, who was nowhere to be seen against Arsenal at the Emirates.

Sancho, who United signed for £73 million back in 2021, has had a few positive moments here and there for United but has seemingly taken two steps back in the eyes of the United manager.

The winger has struggled for consistency since his big-money move to United from Borussia Dortmund, following months of speculation that he would make the move.

The Englishman just hasn’t clicked at United and news like this will certainly do little to help sway Ten Hag’s view on the 23-year-old.

Reason for absence

Speaking in the aftermath of the 3-1 defeat against the Gunners, Ten Hag gave a rather brutal reason as to why Sancho wasn’t included in the travelling squad.

“On his performance in training we didn’t select him,” the former Ajax manager said, according to Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic.

“You have to reach the level every day at Manchester United. You can make choices in the front line, so in this game, he wasn’t selected.”

It’s a brutal moment for Sancho and questions are surely beginning to be asked about whether the forward can arrest the slump and prove his doubters wrong.

Have United reached the end of the road with Sancho

Last season, the winger was sent away from the club for a few weeks to work on his game and his confidence. Then, the winger made a triumphant return, netting an equaliser against Leeds United at Old Trafford.

There have certainly been moments of magic for the winger over the past 12 months but certainly nowhere near consistent enough to warrant a starting spot over Marcus Rashford or even Alejandro Garnacho.

The next year may well be crucial for United and it wouldn’t be a surprise if United tried to cut ties with the former Manchester City winger and looked at a replacement, but it is still early in the season.

The signs, however, don’t look promising.
