Why United's £25 million midfield signing could unleash Mason Mount - Opinion

Mason Mount has had a tough start to life at Old Trafford. The midfielder joined the club for £55 million from Chelsea but has yet to score for the Red Devils.

The Englishman has seemingly been questioned already about just what he offers the Old Trafford club and some fans have questioned Erik ten Hag’s decision to sign the midfielder.

Mount had been deployed on the wing at times at Stamford Bridge and there could well be a chance that the midfielder could excel in that position.

With the signing of Sofyan Amrabat, Mount may well have a position that he could nail down once he returns from injury.

Mason Mount on the right

The right-winger issue has been a constant one for the past decade, you could argue. Whether it’s Antony, Jadon Sancho, or Marcus Rashford, United’s attackers seem to struggle to play on the right-hand side.

One option that could be explored is deploying Mount on the right-hand side. The Englishman is a pressing machine and could well be a superb option on the right.

Mount could be a good option and one that could kill two birds with one stone.

With the addition of Amrabat, the Moroccan could lineup alongside Casemiro. With Mount on the right, this could solve United’s issue of being cut through in midfield as easily as they have been.

Antony impact

The fate of Antony may well play a big part in the Dutchman’s thinking about deploying Mount on the right-hand side.

The Brazilian has been suspended from the Brazil national team and United acknowledged the situation in a statement but, as of yet, the situation remains in limbo.

Nevertheless, Antony’s performances so far simply haven’t been good enough and if that continues, why not deploy Mount on the right?

He would certainly press as much as Antony, if not more and United could well unleash the midfielder with minimal defensive responsibilities and more attacking freedom were he to play in the front line.
