£50m star hails 'top player' he has been tipped to replace at Manchester United

Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi has spoken out in support of Manchester United’s Harry Maguire amid suggestions that he could replace the defender at the Premier League giants in 2024.

Back in August, the Daily Mail reported that Manchester United had drawn up a four-man shortlist to replace Harry Maguire, with Marc Guehi making it into the chosen quartet.

Of course, the collapse of negotiations between Maguire and West Ham meant that a replacement was not required before the September deadline. But with the oft-maligned Englishman likely to be available for transfer once again when the window opens next summer, do not be surprised to see the £50 million-rated Guehi become a man at the centre of much discussion at Old Trafford.

Guehi’s natural-born leadership skills, his strength in the air and his marauding runs into midfield are undoubtedly reminiscent of Maguire in his Leicester pomp, and the 23-year-old remains full of admiration for his Three Lions team-mate despite a couple of very difficult years in Manchester.

Manchester United like Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi

“He is a top professional, a great guy to have around the camp,” Guehi tells BBC Radio 5Live. “One of the leaders.

“I think people forget things very quickly. But he was Manchester United captain, someone who has played for England at many, many top competitions. (Maguire) has helped the team and the nation to get where they are today.

“So, let’s not forget what he has done in a hurry because he is definitely a top player, and an even better person for sure.”

Harry Maguire hopes to rebuild United career

Maguire scored an own goal on his last England appearance – a 3-1 win over auld enemy Scotland in September – another calamitous moment from the luckless stopper increasing the clamour for Guehi to move ahead of him in Gareth Southgate’s pecking order.

But Maguire, it must be said, goes into this latest international break in far better form. He has stepped up for an injury-hit United side of late, setting up Scott McTominay’s 97th minute winner against Brentford on Saturday.
