Old Trafford has not been one of the grounds selected for the European Championships in 2028.
Manchester United made the decision to withdraw the iconic ground from selection earlier this year as the club’s redevelopment plans remain uncertain.
UEFA have today confirmed that Euro 2028 will take place in the UK and Republic of Ireland and Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium will host matches in the city.
United were, according to the Manchester Evening News, unable to offer guarantees that Old Trafford would be ready in time.
This adds to the growing uncertainty around the club as the glacial situation with the Glazer family is seemingly affecting every facet of decision-making.
Old Trafford shunned
There was seemingly shock when UEFA announced the stadiums that would host the competition and the 74,000-capacity ground would not be one of them.
The stadium is in decay, there is no question about that statement.
There have been viral videos of the Old Trafford roof leaking, the stadium seemingly mirrors the club’s current plight, they’re living in the past and not moving forward.
The redevelopment of Old Trafford has been mooted for nearly two years but, as of yet, nothing has been done.
A report from the Manchester Evening News in March showed some of the plans the club had for restoration of the iconic arena.
It seems renovation over rebuild is the keyword with plans to increase the capacity to over 80,000 mooted but there have been no updates about the situation since then.
Stadium issues highlight Glazer issues
The stadium itself, as mentioned, merely mirrors the other issues around the club.
Whether it’s the women’s team which is underfunded, the academy side, or the issues around Erik ten Hag’s side, it is easy to pick holes in the Glazer family’s approach.
Nearly a year after they announced a strategic review, which led to talk of a sale of the club, nothing has happened.
Despite rumours that things were in the works, as of now the Glazers are still in charge.
The uncertainty around the ownership means every facet of the club is in limbo.
A decision over their future needs to be made so the club can attempt to move forward with their ambitious plans for the club.
