Alan Shearer picks out Manchester United legend as one of three best players of his generation

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has been named among Alan Shearer’s top three standouts during his time playing.

Paul Scholes is a legend of the Premier League and also Manchester United, where he won everything at club level.

A mainstay in Sir Alex Ferguson’s dominant sides of the late 90s and 2000’s, Scholes made 718 appearances for United.

Breaking through as part of the Class of 92′ he was an instant favourite and is fondly remembered by United fans and neutrals as one of the best midfielders to ever grace the Premier League.

This sentiment has just been shared by the Premier Leagues best ever goalscorer, Alan Shearer.

Shearer picks his Scholes in his standout players

While on the Rest is Football podcast, Alan Shearer was asked who the standout players were while he was still playing.

To this, Shearer had a three-man response as he told Gary Lineker that one United man was making his list.

“Probably Gazza, but when I was coming towards the end [of his career] it was Steven Gerrard and [Paul] Scholes also.”

The iconic United midfielder named alongside another two greats of the game.

Shearer narrows the debate

One of the biggest debates among Premier League fans is who is the league’s best midfielder.

Paul Scholes, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard are the names commonly mentioned here.

So with excluding Lampard, Shearer could have helped many narrow the debate to include the Merseyside and Manchester men.

We certainly know who we think is the best, but to hear a legendary striker admit it, assures us even further.
