Ex-Manchester United star apologises after 90th minute own goal winner disaster in Europa Conference League

Former Manchester United defender Eric Bailly had a night to forget in the Europa Conference League last night.

Eric Bailly left Manchester United on a free transfer at the start of September after deadline day.

The Ivory Coast defender’s time at Old Trafford was up, bringing an end to a spell which began in 2016 and probably should have ended much sooner.

Bailly, 29, signed with Turkish side Besiktas, where he has played one Super Lig game so far.

Eric Bailly own goal

Last night Eric Bailly was in action in the Europa Conference League, his second appearance in the competition.

An hour into the game, it was all going well. Besiktas were 2-0 up at home to Swiss side Lugano.

French full-back Valentin Rosier was then sent off for a second yellow card, and Besiktas then began to feel the pressure.

Lugano scored two goals in the final 10 minutes to bring the scores level.

Then at the last moment of injury time, Eric Bailly headed the ball into his own net, scoring a disastrous own goal, wrong-footing his own goalkeeper.

Lugano won the game 3-2, with Bailly sealing the improbable comeback and a home defeat for Besiktas.

Disaster for Eric Bailly

The defeat sparked anger among Besiktas fans, with Fotomac reporting that supporters stayed behind after the match to protest: “Beşiktaş fans stood in unison for a long time, calling for the resignation of the management. On the other hand, chants were made against the president Ahmet Nur Çebi.”

This is not the best start for the defender at his new club. Newspaper Huriyet reported: “The night that started well turned into a nightmare in 10 minutes.”

The timing of the late collapse was unfortunate, with Bailly telling Fotomac ahead of the game, “We are aware that we conceded a lot of goals,” and pledging to fix it.

After the game he wrote on Instagram: “Not what you deserve. I assure you to continue working my hardest for the team.”

Bailly scored two own goals for Manchester United in 113 games, one memorably in the derby at home to City in 2021, the last one he played in. It has taken only three matches at Besiktas, and unfortunately, this was another costly one.
