Man Utd must make a move to sign 'Aguero type' talent, as Newcastle circle - opinion

Manchester United must step in and stop Newcastle from signing 20-year-old Brazilian talent Marcos Leonardo.

Marcos Leonardo has been on the cusp of a big move to Europe for seasons now, with Newcastle now seeming more likely. According to UOL, Newcastle are already in contact over signing Leonardo from Santos in January.

At 20 years old, Leonardo is commonly linked with a move away from Brazil. Last summer was no different as Manchester United were said to have joined the race, which should suggest that they should look to return for him in January.

With Rasmus Hojlund struggling in a poor system, and Anthony Martial long past his deadliest days having some striking reinforcements would be much appreciated.

Why Manchester United need to rival Newcastle for transfer

Missing out on a player like Leonardo is something that could bite United in eight months’ time. Martial looks 95 per cent likely to be shifted on with his contract expiring next summer.

This will without a doubt lead Erik ten Hag and the Old Trafford recruiters back into the striker market for someone to play in rotation with Hojlund. So why let such a talented player, who offers such a different threat to Hojlund go to a rival for such a reasonable fee.

Santos are believed to be looking for between €20m and €25m (£17.5m and £21.9m), for the striker’s signature. This would see him become one of their top five most expensive sales ever, but he undoubtedly has the potential to be worth quadruple that.

Allowing Newcastle a free run at him, will look a terrible decision, who could boast an incredible range of forwards with Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson already at the club. Leonardo himself has also suggested he is ready for a big move, which could be scary for the rest of the league.

What would Marcos Leonardo bring to United?

Leonardo stylistically has drawn various comparisons to legendary Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero, it is clear to see why. Aside from his diminutive stature and low centre of gravity, he looks the real deal.

South American football expert Tim Vickery told talkSport about Leonardo, saying the youngster has Aguero ‘type-ability’, in regards to his excellence in the box.

Leonardo according to TransferMarkt has scored 21 goals and four assists in 42 appearances this season through all competitions.
