Opinion: Brazilian star joining Manchester United may be even more likely if Paul Mitchell arrives

Manchester United are being heavily linked with Paul Mitchell amid his ties with rumoured target Vanderson.

United seem to be close to a new era, but maybe not the new era wanted by supporters.

Supporters really wanted a complete takeover with the Glazer family leaving the club, but that won’t be happening.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe will instead be purchasing a 25% stake in United, paying around £1.3billion for the privilege.

A partial sale wasn’t the dream for United fans but Ratcliffe could bring some big changes – including the appointment of a sporting director.

Paul Mitchell played key role in Vanderson to Monaco

Paul Mitchell is the favourite to come in having recently left a similar post with Ligue 1 side Monaco.

Sky Sports suggested earlier this year that Ratcliffe had already earmarked Mitchell for a key role if he invested in United.

Stalybridge-born Mitchell is thought to have already moved back to the North West and wants to take a role at United.

Mitchell may have some transfer targets in mind and one player he has a strong connection to is Monaco right back Vanderson.

The Athletic reported that Mitchell personally convinced Vanderson to snub a host of other clubs in order to join Monaco from Gremio in 2022.

United have already been linked with Vanderson; the Brazilian admitted to AS in September that it was ‘fantastic’ to be linked with a club like United.

Mitchell is clearly a big fan of Vanderson and if United’s scouting team already like him, then a United move may become even more likely should Mitchell arrive.

If Mitchell managed to convince Vanderson into joining Monaco, maybe he can work his magic and lure him to Old Trafford too.

Right back signing in limbo ahead of 2024

Vanderson has played all the way up the right flank for Monaco, recording four goals and nine assists in 68 games.

That kind of attacking threat could be welcomed by Erik ten Hag but a move for a new right back seems up in the air.

Diogo Dalot only penned a new five-year contract in May whilst reports claim that talks are underway over a new deal for Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

It would be hard to see United splashing out for another right back if Dalot and Wan-Bissaka are both staying.

Neither Dalot nor Wan-Bissaka have proven that they should be United’s clear first-choice right back moving forward, leaving the door open for the likes of Vanderson to potentially come in.

Yet if United hand new deals to two right backs in a matter of months, a deal could be tricky – even if Mitchell is a huge fan of Vanderson.
