Rio Ferdinand urged Sir Alex Ferguson to sign Premier League striker, he could have been the ‘next Chicharito’

Rio Ferdinand has admitted that Sir Alex Ferguson ignored his advice to sign a Premier League striker who could well have been great for the Red Devils.

The former Manchester United defender reportedly made an attempt for Sir Alex Ferguson to sign Jermain Defoe.

The former Tottenham Hotspur striker, among other clubs, was the man who Ferdinand recommended as he believed the Englishman would have been a great option for the Red Devils.

Ferdinand, speaking on Vibe with Five, named Defoe as the man who could have made an impact and even compared the striker to another United forward who was a success at Old Trafford.

Ferdinand on Defoe

“The one player I always used to say to him [Ferguson] if you want to buy someone from our England team… Defoe,” the 44-year-old said.

“Because he wouldn’t have started for us [Manchester United] all the time, but it would’ve been another type of Chicharito [Javier Hernandez], that he comes on and all he cares about is scoring, and if we’re winning 5-0 he’ll want to make it 6-0.

“He’s got that inner, ‘I need goals, I live, smell and breathe goals’. We would’ve got him in so many positions to score it would’ve been a joke.”

Defoe certainly would have been a left-field signing for the Red Devils but so was Javier Hernandez and he turned out to be a success at Old Trafford.

Ferdinand’s other recommendation

The other recommendation that the iconic English defender made for Ferguson was another former Tottenham man, Aaron Lennon.

The English winger, who had bundles of pace and energy, was a frightening winger to defend against for Premier League full-backs, back in the day.

Ferdinand admits, despite pushing for Ferguson to make a move on the winger, it seems the Scotsman didn’t agree with the defender’s assessment, Ferdinand said: ” (Ferguson) Just never moved on it.”
