'Taken opportunities': Man United talent shining in two positions out on loan

Brandon Williams’ versatility is proving to be a big help at Ipswich Town as the Manchester United loanee shines away from the Premier League giants.

A right-footed full-back who burst onto the scene at Old Trafford while flying down the left, Brandon Williams’ ambidexterity was always likely to stand him in good stead as the 23-year-old aims to get his career back on track in the Championship.

Williams has played nine games for Ipswich Town, reuniting with former Manchester United assistant Kieran McKenna at Portman Road. Per Transfermarkt, the Crumpsall-born defender has started on the right on five occasions, while being deployed as a left-back four times so far.

He scored a last-gasp equaliser against Huddersfield Town from the right, then swapped sides and shone in the Carabao Cup triumph over top-tier Wolverhampton Wanderers.

And, speaking to BBC Radio Suffolk, Ipswich legend Mick Mills is full of praise not only for Williams’ adaptability, but also with the way he has seized a opportunity to play regular first-team football once again.

Man United’s Brandon Williams shines at Ipswich Town

“(McKenna) has taken Brandon on loan. And you have to almost assure the club that he is coming to, if it is a big club like it is, that you will play the player,” says Mills, capped 42 times by England from 1972 to 1982.

“You cannot take them if you cannot play them. And what is good for the manager is that the player has taken opportunities.

“He played right-back, and he played left-back. He is just showing that he can go into the team in many different positions, which will offer him plenty of minutes, which obviously the manager has promised Manchester United that he will have.”

Ten Hag’s injury curse

Ironically enough, Williams might have been afforded an opportunity at Old Trafford had Erik ten Hag not opted to accept Ipswich’s offer.

Injuries to Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Luke Shaw, Tyrella Malacia and now Sergio Reguilon have left United short of options in both full-back spots.
