Two Man United stars named in WhoScored Champions League team of the week

Manchester United have two players who have been included in the WhoScored Champions League team of the week for matchday 3.

After losing their opening two games in Europe’s premier competition, Manchester United finally picked up a victory, a 1-0 win over FC Copenhagen.

As a result of this, two players have been named in the team of the round and there will be little surprise as to who the pair are.

Andre Onana and Harry Maguire, who have both come under fire this season for their performances, have both been included in the WhoScored team of the week.

Onana and Maguire shine

Off the back of United’s first two games back in the Champions League, the knives were being sharpened against the Cameroon goalkeeper after two bad mistakes in a row.

However, the former Inter Milan goalkeeper, who was instrumental for the Italian side in their run to the Champions League final where they eventually lost against Manchester City, deserves the plaudits.

The heroic penalty save nearly lifted the roof off Old Trafford and it was a nice moment for the 27-year-old who got to savour the moment with the adoring fans who were singing his name.

The experienced goalkeeper, who Erik Ten Hag believed could be United’s new number one, earned an 8.31 rating from WhoScored.

Maguire’s redemption

The English defender probably deserved the biggest cheer as he stumbled his way down the pitch after a bruising 90 minutes of football but he has been excellent after a difficult 12 months.

He has silenced his doubters and then some. He earned a 7.61 rating from WhoScored and with the defender playing so well, alongside Raphael Varane, this means any team in the country will have a hard time breaking down that pair.

Perhaps Erling Haaland can but you wouldn’t bet against Maguire producing another stellar display against the Norwegian forward, formerly of Borussia Dortmund, and completing his renaissance in a United shirt.
