20-year-old makes first appearance since leaving Man Utd, embarrassing £34m PL star in the process

Charlie Wellens made his debut for his new side Reading after leaving Manchester United in the summer.

The academy star was released by Manchester United in June, with Erik ten Hag deciding ultimately not to extend the 20-year-old’s contract at Old Trafford.

Thankfully, Charlie Wellens clinched a deal to sign with League One side Reading, where he reunited with Manchester United under-21s teammate Charlie Savage, who was sold to the Royals earlier this summer.

He made his first Reading appearance this week – in what was an enthralling encounter.

Charlie Wellens makes Reading debut

Wellens came on in the 86th minute against Arsenal U21s to make his debut for the Royals.

Despite the game being 4-2 and more or less done and dusted when he entered the frame, there was still a lot of action to play out in the EFL Cup.

Arsenal youngster Ayden Heaven received a red card, before Sam Smith made it 5-2 to the Royals in the 95th minute, which meant qualification for the knock-out stages as group leaders.

Wellens will be very happy to get off the mark for his new club. He’s been featuring heavily for the academy teams, but he’ll be itching to make his mark on the first-team squad more for the League One side.

Arsenal had some first-team stars in action for their U21 side.

Both academy graduate Reiss Nelson and £34m signing Fabio Vieira started the match. They also had significant impacts on the game.

Vieira scored a penalty with the score 2-0 to the hosts and Nelson provided an assist to bring the score to 3-2 later on.

Nevertheless, their efforts were swamped by an impressive Reading performance, leaving the Premier League stars more than a little embarrassed at full-time.

We wish Wellens all the best in the future and hope this appearance is the first of many.
