Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite is being discussed as a potential top target for Manchester United, according to reports.
The centre-back position at Manchester United is in turmoil and a complete rebuild is required. Over the past three months, a position we all thought was relatively solid has become the weakest part of the team.
The duo of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane was one which we were very excited by, however, injuries have impacted both. Varane through age catching up to him, and Martinez re-aggravating his broken metatarsal injury from last April.
Below these two the depth consists of 35-year-old Jonny Evans, Victor Lindelof and although he’s been great, Harry Maguire.
So United are in a position where they probably need two signings in the position. Jean-Clair Todibo looks most likely on the right side while an Englishman is set to become the top target on the left.
Branthwaite to become top target
TeamTalk has reported that United have listed Branthwaite as their ‘prime defensive target’ in the Premier League.
The report continues to suggest that plans are in place for United’s backline to be overhauled in 2024 and Branthwaite is seen as a priority.
The 21-year-old Everton defender is attracting interest from Spurs along with United. Ten Hag’s side are believed to have also discussed the defender with PSV boss Ruud van Nistelrooy who had a ‘glowing’ review.
Branthwaite isn’t a move for January but rather one for next summer and beyond.
Branthwaite would be competition for Martinez
United have long been linked with a move for Branthwaite, if he arrived he would see himself significantly bolstering the left centre-back position. Being left-footed he would join Martinez in being the two with that quality in the team.
Branthwaite has been described as ‘outstanding‘ by England under-21s manager Lee Carsley this week. At 6ft 4in, Branthwaite would offer United so much physically and aerially, this can be seen in his 28-headed clearances this season which is among the top 10 in the league.
In a dream scenario, Todibo and Branthwaite would be a very strong, tall and technical defensive partnership which on paper, looks perfect for Erik ten Hag’s style.
