Former Premier League midfielder Jamie O’Hara has labelled Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez partnership the best ever strike pair he came up against in England’s top flight.
Last season, Erik ten Hag guided Manchester United back into the Champions League with Anthony Martial and Wout Weghorst at his disposal.
An achievement made all the more impressive when you consider the array of devastating forwards Old Trafford was home to in a previous era, the days of Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez still giving one former Tottenham, Portsmouth and Wolves midfielder sleepless nights.
The best foward line in Premier League history?
“The best (strike partnership) I ever came up against was Rooney and Tevez. I could got get near them. They were so good it was outrageous,” O’Hara recalls, speaking to talkSPORT (14 November, 10pm).
“You had (Cristiano) Ronaldo on the right, (Ryan) Giggs on the left, (Michael) Carrick and (Paul) Scholes in midfield. It was filth. And Rooney and Tevez. The link up between them was on another planet. It was a joke.”
O’Hara played the full 90 minutes as his Tottenham side were hammered by an electrifying Manchester United outfit in an FA Cup clash all the way back in 2008, Tevez, Rooney and a two-goal Cristiano Ronaldo running riot against their North London opponents.
79 goals in one season
“It was probably the only time I walked off a pitch and thought; ‘What’s just happened?’,” O’Hara laughs. “How good are these two people? I thought I was good at football!’
“They were good. They were next level. Rooney and Ronaldo was a joke partnership,”
“I think I would rather (pick) Rooney and Ronaldo over (Arsenal legends) Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp. Do you remember in the Champions League when Rooney and Ronaldo destroyed Arsenal (3-1 at the Emirates in 2009)?
“Do you remember that goal?”
During that double-winning 2007/08 campaign, Rooney, Ronaldo and Tevez scored a staggering 79 goals between them under Sir Alex Ferguson.
