Dimitar Berbatov names 'vital' United ace who must come back into team for West Ham fixture

Dimitar Berbatov has named the one Manchester United who is vital to Erik ten Hag’s style of play

Erik ten Hag has been under increasing pressure at Manchester United but the Dutchman has eased the talk over his future somewhat with a goalless draw at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool had more of the ball and the higher expected goals count but United arguably had the better chances with Rasmus Hojlund being denied by Alisson in the second half, the pick of the chances.

Virgil Van Dijk was frustrated with the Red Devils and claimed that only one side wanted to win at Anfield.

Berbatov names key United player

Despite the Red Devils picking up a point at Anfield, United were without Bruno Fernandes which meant that the opportunities they had on the counterattack were few and far between.

Scott McTominay captained the Red Devils at Anfield. The Scotsman was good but the Red Devils missed the attacking talents that the former Sporting Lisbon midfielder can offer.

Speaking on Stadium Astro, former United striker Dimitar Berbatov believes that Fernandes is the key to Ten Hag’s success despite the Red Devils picking up a point without him.

“Without Bruno, you lose that imagination and that factor going forward, the Bulgarian forward said. “When you’re on the counter-attack you need a midfielder who will play these risky passes to the forwards.

“You saw on Sunday without him that these passes to the forwards were not coming as often as they would. So, you need to choose but he’s the captain.

“I think Bruno is vital for United going forward, So I think he should be playing.”

Bruno’s role

The argument that the Portuguese midfielder being missing for the Red Devils made them more solid defensively is certainly one that has some weight to it.

However, what United offered going forward without the Portuguese midfielder was pitiful. With Fernandes in the team, he can make those long raking passes to free up the forwards to make these runs.

Barring Kobbie Mainoo’s brilliant through ball to Alejandro Garnacho, these passes were few and far between without Fernandes. He remains crucial for United.
