'Not easy': Manager reacts to claims Man United want to sign his £25m striker

Manchester United are being tipped to bring Timo Werner back to the Premier League with RB Leipzig boss Marco Rose admitting that the situation facing the former Chelsea striker is ‘not easy’ at present.

It was an adductor injury which kept the Germany international out of RB Leipzig’s XI during the 2-1 Bundesliga victory over Heidenheim last time out. But, even when fit, Timo Werner has struggled to force his way into Marco Rose’s frontline.

Werner, returning to the Red Bull Arena a year ago in a £25 million deal, has only started two Bundesliga games so far in 2023/24.

And amid claims that Manchester United could offer the speedy striker a fresh start back in the UK – Fabrizio Romano reporting that the Red Devils are monitoring his situation – Rose insists that Werner must decide whether he wants to stay and scrap for his spot or accept that he is fighting a losing battle.

Manchester United keen on Timo Werner

“The opportunity is always there (for Werner). Every player has the task of proving themselves, accepting their situation and classifying it correctly,” former Borussia Dortmund boss Rose tells Sky Germany.

“In the end, it’s the performance that counts.

“Each player must accept this competition (for his place). Now it’s about deciding; ‘Do I accept my situation and fight? Or am I changing (clubs)?’

“When Timo trains, he is very hard working. Nevertheless, his situation is not easy.”

Werner might have become something of a figure of fun during his time at Chelsea but his searing pace, impressive versatility, and his prodigious work-rate could see him fit in well under Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

Mason Mount played alongside Werner at Chelsea, and knows first-hand just how effective Werner can be.

Former Chelsea stars reunited at Old Trafford?

“He’s brilliant,” Mount told ITV after Werner assisted his decisive strike in Chelsea’s 2-0 FA Cup semi-final victory over Crystal Palace back in 2022.

“He’s done so well. You could see (his resilience) in the second half. He had a chance and missed, then ran all the way back to the halfway line to win the ball. That shows the kind of player he is, and what he brings to this team.”
