Man Utd defender names two club legends when asked which player he wished he could have played alongside

Manchester United defender Willy Kambwala has revealed the two legendary former Red Devils players he would want to play alongside in his fledgling career.

Willy Kambwala received his senior Manchester United debut under Erik ten Hag this season and is looking to secure his place in the first team for the foreseeable future.

The 19-year-old centre-back made his first senior appearance for United in the Red Devils’ 2-0 Premier League away defeat to West Ham in December 2023.

Despite his first United match ending in defeat, Kambwala impressed fans with his performance against the Hammers after he started alongside defender Jonny Evans.

Kambwala also made his first appearance at Old Trafford this season after a brief cameo in United’s 3-2 Premier League comeback win against Aston Villa.

Kambwala picks two United legends

Willy Kambwala was contacted on Instagram by academyarena Utd and the ex-Manchester United academy player was asked about his dream player to play alongside.

Posting via Instagram DMs, academyarena Utd asked: “Alright bro, for a new post, I’d love to know what former United player you wish you could’ve played with?”

Academyarena Utd took to social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, and posted a screenshot of the exchange with United defender Kambwala.

Kambwala picked two former United players instead of one, with the Red Devils player choosing club legends Paul Scholes and Nemanja Vidic.

Kambwala to battle for more first-team action

Kambwala will no doubt be hopeful of securing more first-team minutes this season, despite being further down the pecking order for Ten Hag.

The United player came off the bench in the Red Devils’ 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup and 4-2 win over Newport County in the FA Cup this month.

However, Kambwala might see his playing time limited to appearances off the bench after the return of Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez from injury.

If United continue to progress further in the FA Cup, then no doubt Ten Hag will need Kambwala as an important squad player as he rotates his team for matches.

Ten Hag was impressed with the United defender’s debut against the Hammers and has tipped Kambwala to have a “very bright future.”

Speaking after the defeat at the London Stadium, he said: “I think his performance was very solid. You can see has a very bright future.

“Of course, he has to work on himself, but you can see his potential and we are very pleased, I think, with his performance.”

Ten Hag added: “As we’ve seen in this game, I think we have seen many skills for a modern centre-back and as I say, I’m very pleased with his performance.”
