How Gary Neville did Erik ten Hag a 'massive favour' after the Fulham loss

Manchester United suffered a really depleting loss against Fulham on Saturday.

Erik ten Hag was handed his first loss of 2024 against the Cottagers, and it wasn’t exactly underserved. Marco Silva’s side really took the game to United at Old Trafford.

Naturally, Manchester United were then the talk of the town on Saturday night. The performance was heavily scrutinized and will have been spoken about a lot this week.

That is, until Manchester United legend Gary Neville stepped in on Sunday.

Gary Neville did Erik ten Hag a favour

On the Talk of the Devils podcast, The Athletic’s Carl Anka spoke about how he thought Neville’s quote about Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final has actually done the Dutch manager a favour this week. He says:

“I think Gary Neville has done Ten Hag a massive favour by calling Chelsea the ‘blue billionaire bottle jobs’ because a lot of the conversation this morning on Sky Sports is about Chelsea and not about how Manchester United have given up 100 shots on their goal in the last five games.”

Chelsea were undone by a bunch of Liverpool’s kids on Sunday in the Carabao Cup final, which has taken the narrative at the beginning of this new week.

Neville was a major catalyst for this, calling them ‘blue billionaire bottle jobs’ after Virgil van Dijk’s header nestled into Chelsea’s goal in extra time. But this by no means gets Ten Hag out of the woods.

Erik ten Hag will continue to be questioned

Chelsea may have taken the major headlines this week, but if a bad result occurs against Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup on Wednesday – Ten Hag will well and truly be firmly in the firing line once again.

This would mean United are out of all cup competitions and Champions League places are dwindling. The heat would seriously be on.

With so much of the infrastructure changing at United, he can’t afford to make many more mistakes.
