Man United's injury curse continues, now loaned-out 23-year-old suffers 'a set-back'

Manchester United left-back Brandon Williams has suffered a ‘set-back in his recovery’ as the Premier League loanee battles against injury for Championship promotion-pushers Ipswich Town.

It never rains but it pours, right Man United fans?

When the Red Devils sent Sergio Reguilon back to Tottenham Hotspur in January, it was a decision made with the returns of Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw in mind. One month on, Malacia’s absence continues to drag on for far longer than anyone had imagined. Shaw, meanwhile, could miss the rest of 2023/24 with his own fitness issues.

Another Manchester United defender injured

The left-back curse, it seems, is even spreading to those not currently part of Erik ten Hag’s squad. Ipswich Town loanee Brandon Williams has not been seen since the turn of the year.

And it is three weeks now since Kieran McKenna, the former United coach, indicated that Williams was only a few days away from returning.

“We were hoping that would be the timescale,” McKenna tells the East Anglian Daily Times. “But he’s a had a set-back in his recovery.

“He’s still at United (for his recovery). He’s not training yet. We’re not sure how long the set-back is going to take. But he’s not even on the grass with them yet.

“So, he’s still a little way away.”

Lindelof in with Luke Shaw ruled out for Ten Hag

Any thoughts that Man United may have had about re-calling Williams from his spell at Portman Road, then, can be put to bed for now, the 23-year-old keeping Malacia and Shaw company in a crowded treatment room.

The former England Under-21 international had been a big hit in Anglia. Williams featured 15 times in the first half of this season for an Ipswich side looking to make their return to the big time after over two decades away. His most recent appearance, however, came in a 0-0 draw with QPR on the other side of New Years’ Day.

Ten Hag, meanwhile, opted to draft in Victor Lindelof at left-back for Saturday’s meeting with Fulham at Old Trafford.
