Bruno Fernandes fumes at referee Michael Oliver and two more moments missed in Manchester United defeat

Manchester United slipped to a 2-1 defeat to Fulham on Saturday afternoon.

It had been a positive start to 2024 as Manchester United had gone seven games unbeaten but that run came to an end in a dreadful display.

Erik ten Hag’s side never got going and deservedly went a goal down in the second half through Calvin Bassey’s strike.

Harry Maguire thought he had salvaged a point with a late equaliser and United even looked as though they could go on to win.

But as they threw players forward, Fulham caught them on the counter and Alex Iwobi grabbed a last-gasp winner.

The defeat leaves United eight points off the top four with a Champions League place in danger of slipping away.

Here are three moments you might have missed from the game…

Bruno Fernandes fumes

Bruno Fernandes is never one to shy away from confrontation with officials and he was at it again after the loss.

As the referees stood near the centre circle after the game, Fernandes stood in front of referee Micael Oliver and his assistants and could be seen fuming in their direction.

Both Antony and Ten Hag tried to take him away but it was only when the captain had said his piece did he walk off.

Casemiro swaps shirts

United’s injury list potentially got even bigger in the second half as Casemiro was forced off the field with a head injury.

The Brazilian was able to walk off on his own volition, while holding a paper towel to his head, at least so hopefully it isn’t serious.

Casemiro’s other action of note in the game was to strangely swap his shirt with Fulham’s Rodrigo Muniz at half-time.

It’s an act usually saved for the full-time whistle and you can’t imagine Roy Keane being pleased to see it happening at the break.

Omari Forson told to calm down

It was a full debut to forget for youngster Omari Forson.

The teenager came into the team in place of the injured Rasmus Hojlund in an exciting change but looked out of his depth in his first start.

Ten Hag was even forced to tell Forson to calm down after he needlessly flew into a challenge on Bassey early on.

Forson didn’t make contact but that didn’t stop Marco Silva from asking for a booking. He got away with it but it will be a valuable lesson for the prospect.
