Former Manchester United midfielder Fred is in with a chance of winning a European trophy this season.
Like his rare goals, occasions where Fred is a topical name concerning Manchester United right now tend to come along like buses.
Sold last summer for £13 million, the recently forgotten midfielder has been a talked about name this week, which began with him responding to Manchester United wishing him happy birthday, with an ‘always a red’ declaration.
He was then highlighted as a key player by former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, much to the shock of club legend Roy Keane, who just wasn’t convinced.
Manchester United fans meanwhile have not been convinced by his replacement, Sofyan Amrabat.
Fred continues Fenerbahce unbeaten streak
Fred is now back in action for Fenerbahce after a spell out injured, and he remains unbeaten.
Last night he added to this streak as his side beat Union Saint-Galloise 3-0 away from home in the Europa Conference League.
And his performance went down a storm, with Fred playing 68 minutes in the victory.
Turkish newspaper Milliyet carried a headline: “Fenerbahçe’s indispensable Fred!”, hailing him as a difference maker.
Fred has played 22 games for Fenerbahce, winning 21, drawing one.
Hurriyet also focused on the midfielder before the match, hailing him as ‘Fenerbahce’s biggest trump card’.
Turkish journalist Ercan Taner commented after the win, “There is such a thing as Fred quality. The midfield feels relaxed with him.”
Fred aiming for double silverware
The Europa Conference League is an open competition, won by Roma in 2022 and West Ham in 2023.
Fenerbahce might fancy their chances, and have essentially booked their spot in the next round with this impressive away win.
Fred’s side are also battling for the domestic title, where they are just two points off top spot in the Turkish Super Lig. His return can only aid their chances.
