'I've been saying' – Man Utd legend argues Sir Alex Ferguson would have 'snapped up' two talented players in a heartbeat

Teddy Sheringham has claimed that Sir Alex Ferguson would not have hesitated in bringing two talented players to Old Trafford right now if he were still Manchester United manager.

Sir Alex Ferguson, who is one of the best managers of all time, bowed out of Manchester United in 2013 after he led the club to their last Premier League title.

The 82-year-old iconic Scotsman was widely commended for how he overhauled his teams and maintained his dominance at the top of English football at United.

Ferguson was all about bringing the best in class to Old Trafford and managed several world-class players, including Al Nassr superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.

Teddy Sheringham left Tottenham in 1997 and arrived at United as part of a £3.5m deal, following the sudden retirement of Red Devils legend Eric Cantona.

The 57-year-old former United and Spurs striker enjoyed incredible success under Ferguson and was a key part of the iconic treble-winning side in 1999.

Sheringham names two players Ferguson would sign

Speaking on talkSPORT, Teddy Sheringham opened up on Manchester United’s struggles since Sir Alex Ferguson announced his retirement from management.

The United legend believes that the Red Devils squad under Erik ten Hag is lacking “leadership qualities,” a key feature that Ferguson had in his teams of the past.

Ferguson was known for having strong personalities in the United dressing room and Gary Neville previously revealed three figures who were locker-room leaders.

The legendary former United manager also had incredible leadership with his captains, which included the likes of club legend Roy Keane.

Sheringham has insisted that Ferguson would have “snapped up” top English players like Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane and Arsenal star Declan Rice.

“I’ve been saying this for a little while now, the problem with Man United, for me, is the leadership qualities,” he said.

“You look at the players that were available in the summer, for me, Harry Kane and Declan Rice… years ago under Fergie, they would have been snapped up.

“At least they would have been in for those type of players, this summer they weren’t even in for the players and that was the disturbing thing for me.”

Man Utd legend Sheringham on Kane and Rice

Ferguson is believed to be a big admirer of Harry Kane and the United legend admitted that he was one of four players he wished he managed at Old Trafford.

Kane was believed to be a top target for United in the past and was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford last summer before he signed for Bayern Munich.

Declan Rice has also impressed in his debut season with Arsenal after the Gunners prized him away from West Ham last summer in a deal worth £105m.

Sheringham insisted that England internationals Rice and Kane are the types of players who ‘lead by example’ and something that United are missing right now.

“Once you get players like Harry Kane and Declan Rice playing the game professionally week in, week out, leading by example, other players follow,” he continued.

“At the moment, you’ve got players at Manchester United, they’re all kind of looking after themselves.

“Rather than having a Tony Adams in your team and making sure everyone is playing really well, don’t really care about their own performance, just making sure that the team do well.

“There’s no-one in the team like that at the moment and it’s just like, ‘Well, I’m doing my job’ – that’s where it falls down for me.”
