Making your international debut against Brazil is everybody’s dream but it’s just another step in the rise of Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo.
Think about all the stars Brazil have boasted over the years; Ronaldo, Romario, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, Kaka, Neymar – Brazil have been the pinnacle of international football.
Imagine telling Kobbie Mainoo 10 years ago – then just an eight-year old in Stockport – that he would be making his England debut against Brazil in 2024.
Mainoo would have been as giddy as any kid at the time, but he’s now just taking it all in his stride having become arguably the biggest wonderkid in the Premier League.
The 18-year-old has been sensational for United this season, making a huge impact in midfield with his composure and poise catching the eye.
Mainoo has now landed his first England cap, something off the bench with 15 minutes to play in a 1-0 defeat at Wembley.
Gareth Southgate was impressed with what he saw, praising Mainoo as his rise continues with no sign of slowing down.

Mainoo didn’t look out of place against Brazil and will be looking to add plenty more caps to his name – possibly even at Euro 2024.
The United talent has taken to social media to react, posting an emotional message after his debut.
“Special feeling making my senior England debut at Wembley and in front of my family. A moment I will never forget. Now we bounce back and refocus for Tuesday,” said Mainoo.
Mainoo received messages from a host of players, including Bruno Fernandes and Declan Rice, but Luke Shaw’s message sums up how United fans feel.
Luke Shaw on Mainoo
Shaw offered just three words – ‘what a player’.
Shaw has seen Mainoo’s rise at United first-hand, witnessing him in training as well as playing alongside him this season.
The United left back has seen plenty of young talents fizzle out in his career but seemingly sees something special in Mainoo.
Shaw and Mainoo could yet feature together for England this summer with Mainoo’s coming on in leaps and bounds this season.
Shaw himself knows what it’s like to be a top wonderkid and he will be looking to help Mainoo as much as he can having racked up the appearances for club and country over the last 10 years.
