Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer both reacted to Manchester United and England legend Wayne Rooney making a major announcement at Euro 2024 in Germany.
Wayne Rooney has been in the BBC Sport studio as part of the UK-based broadcaster’s punditry line-up for this summer’s Euros.
The 38-year-old Manchester United legend had an extensive playing career with England and was tipped for his role at the BBC due to his valuable insight.
Rooney has been a BBC Sport pundit for different matches across Euro 2024, but the England legend has been overlooked for fixtures involving the Three Lions.
Rooney makes Euro 2024 announcement
Wayne Rooney confirmed that he would be stepping down from his punditry role for BBC amid his return to management with Plymouth Argyle.
The former Manchester United and England striker had his managerial future plunged into doubt after he was sacked by Birmingham City in January.
Rooney’s spell at Birmingham City lasted only 83 days and the United legend oversaw nine defeats in his 15-match run at the club.
The ex-England captain actively worked in punditry after his ill-fated spell with Birmingham City, including becoming a regular on The Overlap’s Stick to Football.
However, Rooney made his return to management last month after he was appointed Plymouth Argyle head coach.
Speaking on BBC, the Plymouth boss confirmed that he would be leaving his role at the BBC after Belgium’s 0-0 draw against Ukraine at Euro 2024 on Wednesday.
“Wayne, it’s your last time here because you were gonna stay longer but you’ve got a job,” Gary Lineker said.
“When does it start?”
Responding to Lineker, Rooney said: “I fly home tomorrow. The lads are back in on the 3rd of July, so I’ll be home and straight down to Plymouth.”

Rooney admitted that he was ‘excited’ by his return to management and learning more about Plymouth’s run of fixtures for next season.
Plymouth begin their pre-season campaign in July ahead of their opening Championship match of the season against Sheffield Wednesday on 11th August.
“Yeah, the excitement was there again today,” Rooney said, as per the Manchester Evening News.
“When you see the fixtures, you’re looking through the opening games, the Christmas schedule and stuff. Really excited.”
Premier League legend Alan Shearer took a cheeky swipe at Rooney by suggesting the former United captain will have a taste of his own medicine from pundits.
“Wait till the pundits start criticising you,” he told Rooney.
Lineker, meanwhile, wished Rooney all the best for his return to management after the Birmingham City and DC United boss confirmed his exit from his BBC role.
“We wish you all the best, Wayne,” he said.
