'Getting this deal over the line'... Expert tips Man Utd to agree move for player club have bid rejected for

Manchester United are still looking to add another centre-back to follow up on the capture of Leny Yoro.

Leny Yoro went straight into Manchester United’s starting line-up against Rangers at the weekend.

This was partly due to United’s desire to get Yoro quickly acclimatised. It was also reflective of the lack of current options.

Lisandro Martinez is not yet back after the Copa America. Meanwhile, Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof were not available due to fitness issues.

This is a concern, with both players 30 or over. It is an additional reason why Manchester United still want to sign another centre-back.

Matthis de Ligt still wanted

A move for Jarrad Branthwaite looks difficult. Everton don’t need to cash in after selling Amadou Onana for £50 million to Aston Villa.

Matthijs de Ligt is still in play. Manchester United showed their intentions by making a first bid for him this week.

Bayern rejected United’s De Ligt offer, holding out for a higher fee. Christian Falk reports Bayern want £42 million plus add-ons.

Bundesliga expert Jan Aage Fjorfoft believes Manchester United should still be optimistic over the chance of landing De Ligt.

He writes: “Re: de Ligt. Bayern MUST sell players to finance new once [sic]. That’s why I think Manchester United should be optimistic about getting this deal over the line…”

Uli Hoeness open to De Ligt exit

Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness has left the door open for Matthijs de Ligt to be sold this summer if the price is right – but would not be opposed to him staying either.

Quoted by The Mail, Hoeness said: “It is possible that a defender will still leave. De Ligt is Dutch, the coach at Man United is Dutch. I would have no problem if he stays.”

Asked about another player, he was more definitive, adding: “Personally, I would not sell Upamecano.”

The implication is clear, if Manchester United want De Ligt badly enough, the Red Devils must pay up. Otherwise Bayern will keep him and use him.

The ball is in United’s court – but if Fjortoft is correct and Bayern must sell before buying, that should make finding a compromise with the German club a little easier.
