Harry Redknapp is convinced Sir Alex Ferguson was untouchable in one area at Man Utd and ‘no-one’ would dare interfere

Harry Redknapp has insisted that former manager Sir Alex Ferguson would have had undisputed control over one key area during his legendary run at Manchester United.

Sir Alex Ferguson ushered in a dynasty at Old Trafford and oversaw incredible success for Manchester United during his time in the managerial dugout.

The 82-year-old iconic Scotsman arrived at United in 1986 from Scottish side Aberdeen and overcame a tough start to life at Old Trafford.

Ferguson led United to all 13 of their Premier League titles and became the first manager in history to lead an English team to a continental treble.

The legendary Scot is widely regarded as one of the best managers of all time after his impact in Scotland with Aberdeen and in England with United.

Ferguson bowed out of Old Trafford in 2013 after he led the Red Devils to their last Premier League title at the end of the 2012-13 season.

United have struggled in the aftermath of the Ferguson era, despite Red Devils co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe expressing his desire to restore the club’s prestige.

Redknapp talks Man Utd and Ferguson

Sir Alex Ferguson was widely revered for his legendary Manchester United teams of the past and his ability to attract the best in class to Old Trafford.

The United legend had incredible success in the transfer window, including signing star-studded talents like Cristiano Ronaldo and Eric Cantona.

However, Ferguson also failed in his efforts to sign key players and the Scotsman even endured unforgettable flop signings, including the likes of Bebe.

Harry Redknapp crossed paths with the former United manager during his time as a head coach, with the ex-Tottenham boss opening up about his time at Spurs.

Speaking about his relationship with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, Redknapp spotlighted Ferguson and how the United legend managed transfers at Old Trafford.

Redknapp claimed that Ferguson “signed his own players” and not even former United chief executive David Gill would tell the Scot what to do in the window.

“At Tottenham, Daniel never really interfered,” he told FourFourTwo magazine.

“Although, like everybody, he might try harder to get a lad if he fancied them! He might say, ‘Oh, we couldn’t quite get the deal done, Harry…’

“But, in the main, he was as good as gold to deal with. If we could afford it, great. If we couldn’t afford it and couldn’t spend the money, that was how it was with Daniel.

“It’s different now, players are picked by the head of recruitment or whatever they call them – they used to be called a scout.

“Back in the day, no-one signed players for Alex Ferguson, he signed his own players.

“No-one would have had any input, he wouldn’t have been listening to heads of recruitment or anybody else.

“I’m sure David Gill, who was a fantastic chief executive, would never have tried to tell Alex who he should sign.”

Ferguson on working with Gill

David Gill was widely seen as Ferguson’s right-hand man behind the scenes at Old Trafford and was a largely influential figure at the Red Devils in the past.

The former United chief executive stepped down from his role at the Premier League club at the same time as Ferguson bowed out of Old Trafford in 2013.

Ferguson admitted that he had a “million arguments” with Gill while he was at United, but he added that none of their disagreements were “ever personal.”

Speaking of Gill in 2013, Ferguson said: “David has been a magnificent chief executive.

“Of course, we have had a million arguments, but I have always enjoyed them because I know that David has two great qualities: he is straight and he always puts Manchester United first.

“No disagreement is ever personal with him. He always wants the best for United.”
