'All day long' - Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher argue over 'important' Man Utd legend in top three rankings, he 'cannot' be denied No 1 spot

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher were in complete disagreement over legendary former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson in their Sky Sports rankings.

Sir Alex Ferguson is widely considered one of the best managers of all time after his legendary career with Manchester United in England and with Aberdeen in Scotland.

Gary Neville spent his entire playing career under the 82-year-old Scotsman and enjoyed incredible silverware success during his time at Old Trafford.

Jamie Carragher, on the other hand, watched on as a Liverpool player while Ferguson ushered in a period of dominance in English football for United.

Ferguson engineered all 13 of United’s Premier League title wins and was the first manager in history to lead an English side to a continental treble.

The iconic Scot bowed out of Old Trafford in 2013 after he led United to their last Premier League trophy at the end of the 2012-13 campaign.

Ferguson had a long-lasting impact on the sport, with United struggling to climb back to the top of English football after the Aberdeen legend’s departure.

Neville and Carragher argue over Ferguson

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher took part in a Sky Sports video and the pair were tasked with ranking the three best Premier League managers of all time.

The two Sky Sports pundits were in agreement that legendary former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger would secure third place in the rankings.

Neville and Carragher were then left with the options of Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola in the rankings.

“I would go Sir Alex Ferguson all day long for the impact on the Premier League without a shadow of a doubt,” Neville said.

“Unequivocal that he is the most important manager in Premier League history.”

Pep Guardiola, who has lavished praise on Ferguson in the past, has seen unbelievable success with United’s crosstown rivals.

The 53-year-old former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss, much like Ferguson, has ushed in a period of dominance over English football.

Guardiola completed an unprecedented feat last season after capturing a fourth consecutive Premier League title with Manchester City.

Speaking on the debate, Carragher said: “But when you look at what Pep’s done, he’s done things that Alex Ferguson hasn’t done in the Premier League.

“Well, he’s won it four times in a row. He’s won it four times in… so in six seasons, he’s won it four times.

“Ferguson went seven years without winning the league when he came, didn’t he?”

Neville and Carragher settle on rankings

Neville responded to Carragher by saying that Ferguson won the Premier League in his first season before the Liverpool legend hit back with what he actually meant.

“No, he won the Premier League in his first season,” Neville said.

Reacting to Neville’s hilarious response, Carragher added: “I’m talking about First Division, aren’t I?”

Neville remained firm on his stance that former Red Devils boss Ferguson “cannot” be denied his status as the most important Premier League manager of all time.

“No, Sir Alex Ferguson in ‘92, ‘93, in 20 years in the Premier League, 19 years in the Premier League he won 13,” he explained.

“And I just think you cannot deny he’s the most important Premier League manager of all time.”

Carragher went ahead and placed Ferguson top of the list and Guardiola second, but the former Liverpool defender claimed that the rankings were “joint” in his mind.

“Okay, we’ll go there [placing Ferguson at No 1 and Guardiola at No 2],” he said.

“I think it’s joint. Both [are] getting a gold medal.”
