Manuel Ugarte to Manchester United best case scenario, Uruguayan follows one of club's greatest ever players

Manuel Ugarte is set to be unveiled as a Manchester United player after a long-awaited agreement for his transfer was struck.

Weeks of negotiating back and forth between Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain finally paid off, with Manuel Ugarte’s transfer fee finally agreed.

United will pay an initial £42 million for the Uruguay international, who adds key options to Manchester United’s midfield.

Ugarte’s style of play will benefit United amid Casemiro’s desire to get forward, no longer filling the remit of what is required in terms of his ability to cover defensively.

Ugarte has ‘grinta’

Manuel Ugarte is a fighter, a player who plays with passion, and does not shy away from the physical side of the game.

Uruguay star Ugarte is the type of South American player Manchester United fans have embraced. Think back to the ‘Argentina’ chants during Gabriel Heinze’s time at the club.

Lisandro Martinez is a more modern example, with manager Erik ten Hag praising the ‘grinta‘ he brought to the club, which is applicable to Ugarte.

He said in 2022: “I think it’s important, yeah. I think the Premier League is high intensity, lots of challenges. We need such players. I know from South Americans… I call it grinta.

“Controlled, aggressive. You need that in your game and with him we have such a player.”

Ugarte best case is Roy Keane

Add in a Gabriel Heinze or Lisandro Martinez style performer into Manchester United’s midfield, and you have something special, one whose commitment will resonate with supporters.

The best case scenario is Manuel Ugarte takes on a Roy Keane style enforcer role, becoming a dominant player who opponents fear going up against.

Roy Keane was of course more than an enforcer, he could play and drive the team forward, and that’s where Ugarte will have to prove himself and develop his game.

But if we are talking about a ‘best case scenario’ for Ugarte, an ambition for the type of player he can become and represent for the club, then Keane is the pinnacle to which he must aspire.

Ugarte is a tireless and relentless player who has his best years ahead of him. In both the short and long-term he can play a major role for Manchester United.
