MUTV pundits praise 'powerful' Man Utd wonderkid, they are both making the same comparison

Manchester United took as many as 12 untested youngsters on the tour squad to the USA.

And among the 12 young players on tour, one has begun to stand out among the rest, at a position where Manchester United badly need reinforcements.

Harry Amass, 17, is one of the youngest players on tour – he’s just older than Jack Fletcher by three days, and he is making the biggest impression.

Amass has started both games on the US tour, and against Real Betis he played 63 minutes, a further sign of the trust Erik ten Hag has placed in him.

Harry Amass earns Luke Shaw comparisons

Harry Amass signed for Manchester United from Watford last summer and he had an integral role in the under-18s title winning season in 2023/24.

After stepping up to the under-21s, Amass is getting a first team chance on tour with both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia absent.

At the time Amass clinched his move, we suggested Manchester United had just signed the next Luke Shaw, and the England international has tipped him for future success too.

Speaking to MUTV, two former Manchester United players made the Luke Shaw comparison, including one of the club’s greatest ever left-backs.

Former academy striker Danny Webber said: “He’s shown a lot of promise. I liken him to Luke Shaw, in his style, he’s not massive but he’s powerful enough, he’s using the ball really well, I’m excited.”

He noted that Amass was partly culpable for Real Betis’ first goal for ‘switching off’ in the build-up, he believed he would use it as a learning curve.

At the other end Amass played a role in Amad’s goal, putting in the cross which led to his strike.

Denis Irwin also expressed his faith in Amass, commenting: “He’ll have aspirations to go as high as possible, he had a fantastic season last season, you are just looking for progression.

“The way he plays is very much like Luke Shaw, he’s got Luke’s build.”

Irwin backing Maguire to help Amass

Playing with experienced first team stars will help Amass’ progress along, and Irwin says he has noted Harry Maguire offering his assistance.

He said: “The fact that Harry Amass has got Harry Maguire next to him will help him, just guiding him where to go, whether to go forward, back, come in, come out.

“It’s a learning curve it really is, but it’s great the manager trusts him.”

You would expect Luke Shaw to return for Manchester United when the season begins, but at the moment, Amass is putting himself in the conversation to challenge Tyrell Malacia as his deputy.

The pre-season games, good and bad moments, will be invaluable to Amass.
