'I do believe' - Man Utd legend claims 'top' talent has potential to be 'one of the best' players in world, he sends him clear advice

Manchester United legend Nicky Butt has waxed lyrical about one “proper lad” at Old Trafford and said “there’s a lot of talent” in the player.

The Red Devils have endured a mixed start to the new Premier League season under manager Erik ten Hag ahead of the September international break.

Manchester United defeated Fulham 1-0 at Old Trafford in their Premier League opener in August before suffering a 2-1 loss to Brighton at the Amex last month.

Erik ten Hag’s woes continued on Sunday after Premier League rivals Liverpool inflicted a devastating 3-0 defeat on United at Old Trafford.

United have only claimed three points from a possible nine in the opening stages of the campaign, with the Red Devils 14th in the Premier League table.

The Red Devils return to action after the international break on 14th September against Southampton at the St Mary.

Ten Hag’s men will also begin their campaigns in the Carabao Cup and the Europa League this month alongside their Premier League season.

Butt talks Man Utd star’s future

Speaking to talkSPORT, Nicky Butt has dropped his two cents on Marcus Rashford’s time at Manchester United and his recent run of performances at the club.

Marcus Rashford has started all three of United’s opening Premier League matches, but the England forward has failed to score or register an assist so far.

The 26-year-old United star was also met with criticism last month after his missed chances in the Community Shield defeat to Manchester City at Wembley.

Butt has now admitted that it could be time for a “change” in Rashford’s career, despite his deep-seated admiration for the United star.

“I don’t know and it’s actually sad watching that because I’ve known Marcus since he was probably eight and nine at Man United coming through and he’s always been the one that you hold hope for,” he said.

“I do believe and people will be screaming down the phone now probably but I do believe he’s still got the talent to be one of the best top players in the world.

“He’s just not clicking for the last few years at Man United, you’re always saying he’s just going to do it, he’s going to do it but it’s looking like maybe it’s time for a change for him.

“No-one really knows what his mentality is, but there’s a lot of talent within that man and he’s a top, top footballer.”

Butt defends Man Utd talent Rashford

Marcus Rashford was in the form of his life in Erik ten Hag’s debut season at Old Trafford, but the United star struggled last season for the Red Devils.

The Three Lions international only scored eight times and registered six assists in 43 appearances across all competitions in the 2023-24 season.

Rashford’s lacklustre season with United also led to the Red Devils forward missing out on England’s Euro 2024 campaign in Germany in the summer.

“But it’s just not happening for Man United now, people always point to the fact of his body language, he doesn’t care, I can tell you now he does care, he’s a proper lad but he’s just not clicking for him,” Butt continued.

“Maybe it is time to go and find a club where he can get a bit of a deep breath, the eyes aren’t on him all the time.

“He’s the excuse for all the fans, all the fans look at him and it’s not just him, the whole team, the whole squad needs to up the game.”
