Man Utd legend’s son dropped six-word reaction after being compared with his father, his stance was clear

Kai Rooney made his feelings clear after he was asked if he had the same potential as Manchester United and England legend Wayne Rooney.

Wayne Rooney is widely regarded as one of the best Premier League strikers of all time after his sensational impact at Old Trafford with Manchester United.

During his time at Old Trafford, the United legend lifted five Premier League titles, a Champions League, a Europa League, three League Cups and an FA Cup.

Rooney, who is now the Plymouth Argyle manager, went on to eclipse Red Devils legend Sir Bobby Charlton to become United’s all-time leading scorer during his playing career.

The 38-year-old former United striker scored a whopping 253 times in 559 appearances for the Red Devils during his magnificent spell at Old Trafford.

Rooney left United in 2017 and returned to boyhood club Everton, with the former England striker later playing for DC United and Derby County.

Kai Rooney on comparison to Man Utd legend

Kai Rooney has decided to follow in the footsteps of the Manchester United legend by becoming a professional footballer and is already making a real name for himself.

Wayne Rooney’s son is part of the Manchester United youth academy after he signed for the Red Devils in 2020.

Kai, who is believed to be 14 years old, has high expectations placed on his shoulders after his father’s career at club level and on the international stage.

Coleen Rooney has now revealed that Kai has wasted no time in playing down the comparisons with the United legend by pointing out the difference between them.

“We’ve never pressured them into even playing football,” she told The Daily Mirror.

“We’ve always just let them decide what they want to do. My eight-year-old was playing and doing really well but then decided he didn’t want to, and that’s OK.

“I think they sometimes get pressure off other people, you know. People approach them now and then if we’re out, they do say, ‘Are you are as good as your dad?’ Kai says, ‘I’m a different type of player.’

“You’ve got to let them know that you don’t have to follow and to be your own person.”

Rooney on Kai comparisons

Rooney has previously opened up about his son’s entry into football and how Kai has the same goalscoring instincts as him by ‘sniffing’ chances out in matches.

“He’s got my physique. He’ll be taller than me,” he said on The Overlap in May.

“He’s a goalscorer. In the box, he sniffs chances out and that’s his game, he’s doing okay.”

Speaking on Kai’s future, Rooney added: “It’s too early. I think he’s showing potential and good signs.

“He’ll be at United for the next two years and then that’s when they make decisions on you, so we’ll just have to wait and see.”
