Manchester United fans have made their feelings clear on Diogo Dalot after his performance in the Europa League clash against Porto on Thursday evening.
The Red Devils secured their place in this season’s Europa League campaign after their stunning 2-1 win over Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley in May.
Manchester United will play eight matches – four at home and four away – in the new league phase format for the Europa League in the 2024-25 season.
Erik ten Hag’s men dropped valuable points at the start of their Europa League campaign last Wednesday in their clash with FC Twente at Old Trafford.
Christian Eriksen fired United into a first-half lead against FC Twente, but Sam Lammers’ second-half equaliser salvaged a point for the Dutch side.
United then suffered a devastating 3-0 Premier League defeat to Tottenham at Old Trafford on Sunday before their trip to Portugal on Thursday.
Dalot’s performance vs Porto
Diogo Dalot underwent a career resurgence under Erik ten Hag and the Manchester United star excelled at Old Trafford in the 2024-25 campaign.
However, the 25-year-old Portugal defender has faced criticism over his form and consistency this season, despite being played out of his preferred right-back spot.
Ten Hag has turned to Dalot as a makeshift left-back in the absence of Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, with Noussair Mazraoui deployed at right-back.
United made a strong start in the first half against Porto and took the lead in the opening 10 minutes after Marcus Rashford found the back of the net.
Rasmus Hojlund doubled United’s lead in the 20th minute before Ten Hag’s men blew a 2-0 lead before half-time at the Estadio do Dragao.
Goals from Pepe and Samu Omorodion pulled Porto level in the first half, with Dalot enduring a poor display at left-back alongside the other United defenders.
United’s poor defence suffered a further setback only five minutes into the second half after Samu Omorodion fired Porto into the lead in the Europa League clash.
Man Utd fans react to Dalot vs Porto
United fans on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, ruthlessly slammed Dalot for his woeful performance against Porto at the Estadio do Dragao.
Red Devils supporters complained that United youngster Harry Amass should have played as a natural left-back ahead of Dalot, with fans calling out the “criminal” decision.
“Diogo Dalot is such a weak link in this side at left-back,” one fan said.
Someone else added: “When will people realise Dalot at left-back doesn’t work? The fact Amass hasn’t seen any minutes yet this season is criminal.”
“Harry Amass will play better [at] LB than Diogo Dalot,” another claimed.
While a fourth tweeted: “Dalot’s defending is atrocious [for Man United]. That left-footed Amass should have been trusted with [that].”
“Dalot is absolutely shocking! Unleash Harry Amass,” a fifth wrote.
Another posted: “Dalot is a massive problem and [Erik ten Hag] can’t see it. Ridiculous. Don’t tell me there’s not a left-back inside the club.”
Somebody else commented: “I really don’t know what Dalot is doing. He has been a major problem this season. Most of the goals against us [come] from the area he’s [supposed] to [be] manning.”
An eighth said: “I can’t believe I’m actually sad we sold [Aaron Wan-Bissaka] instead of Dalot.”
