Viktor Gyokeres breaks his silence over rumours of Man Utd switch, Ruben Amorim will like his answer

Ruben Amorim’s arrival at Manchester United has led to several Sporting Lisbon players being linked, including Viktor Gyokeres.

The brilliance which was Ruben Amorim’s Sporting Lisbon was headlined by devastating striker Viktor Gyokeres.

Arguably Europe’s most in-form player, Gyokeres only moved to Sporting in 2023 but since then has been immaculate in front of goal, scoring 66 times – leading to inevitable Manchester United interest.

The performance which made him the top target for every United supporter was his hat-trick against Man City – which simply blew United fans away.

Gyokeres has linked with United even prior to the arrival of Amorim however the appointment of the Portuguese man as head coach has done nothing but accelerate the rumours.

In a world where a raw Rasmus Hojlund costs £64m, Gyokeres would only cost £63m – an absolute bargain for a player of his quality and does seem to be a no-brainer.

Viktor Gyokeres reacts to Manchester United question

Gyokeres has taken a temporary break from scoring for Sporting this week and instead is bagging goals for his country Sweden.

After getting on the scoresheet against Slovakia on Saturday night, media questions to the Swede as expected touched on Amorim and United.

Speaking with Fotboll Skanalen following the 2-1 win, Gyokeres was asked if he would follow his former boss to Manchester.

“Joining Amorim at Man United? Probably he already has strikers there…”, Gyokeres responded, far from ruling the move out which will please Amorim.

Despite how much sense this move would make for United and Gyokeres, there are a few reasons it may not happen.

After joining United, Amorim insisted he won’t sign Sporting players. Meanwhile, Sporting’s president said Gyokeres will not leave in January.

Gyokeres answering so cryptically however can be taken as a suggestion of his interest in a possible switch – but also a hint that he’s aware Amorim will likely have to evaluate his current crop of strikers.

Definitely not a move we can write off as it is far from a no.

Does Ruben Amorim need Gyokeres?

Signing a player like Gyokeres would be less about need, and more a luxury, cherry on top of the cake player.

At United, Amorim has Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee as his senior options – neither are lighting the game up this season though.

Zirkzee has even been linked with an exit from United already which would create the space for the Swedish machine.

However, rumours suggest Amorim could actually be planning to deploy Marcus Rashford as a striker.

That being said, if the space is made and the funds are there, handing Amorim a striker like Gyokeres is a move that nobody would disagree with as it could be a move which changes the game for United.
