A former Manchester United player dropped a powerful and instant reaction to the Red Devils’ performance against Newcastle at Old Trafford on Monday evening.
Ruben Amorim’s men signed off 2024 with their fourth consecutive defeat across all competitions after Newcastle secured a comfortable 2-0 Premier League win.
Alexander Isak fired Newcastle into the lead in the opening five minutes after turning in Lewis Hall’s cross with a close-range header past Andre Onana.
Anthony Gordon then picked out Joelinton with a cross and the Brazilian headed home past Andre Onana and put Newcastle 2-0 up before the 20-minute mark.
Manchester United were played off the park in the first half and Ruben Amorim was fortunate to see the Red Devils not concede any further before half-time.
The Red Devils were left chasing the match in the second half and Newcastle walked away from Old Trafford with all three Premier League points.
Ex-Man Utd man sums up Newcastle defeat
Manchester United have lost three consecutive Premier League matches under Red Devils boss Ruben Amorim in December alone.
The Red Devils are 14th in the Premier League table and United are only seven points above the relegation zone after 19 league matches.
Amorim, who replaced Erik ten Hag in the Old Trafford dugout, now faces an uphill task in turning the momentum back in United’s favour amid the current run of form.
Ex-United player Gordon Hill took to social media platform X, formerly Twitter, and admitted his complete “surprise” at the scoreline against Newcastle at half-time.
“Just watching the game, after doing a soccer camp, and thought [it would] be nice to now have a nice cup of tea after enjoying coaching my young players,” he wrote.
“Wow, got a surprise [seeing] United 2-0 down at half-time at Old Trafford. It is sad to see what is happening and can do nothing about it.”
Amorim speaks out on Man Utd’s run of form
United face a tough start to 2025 with their trip to Anfield for their showdown with Premier League leaders Liverpool on 5th January.
Amorim’s side will then travel to the Emirates on 12th January for the start of their FA Cup title defence against Premier League rivals Arsenal in the third round.
Speaking after the defeat to Newcastle, Amorim admitted his disappointment at United’s run of form and called it “one of the worst moments” in the club’s history.
“It is really hard,” he told the BBC, as per BBC Sport.
“It is one of the worst moments in the history of our club, and we have to accept that. Another loss in front of our own supporters.
“In this moment, it is really tough to turn around results because we don’t have a lot of time to train the base of the way we want to play.
“In the bad situations, you need that base to hold on to. In the second half, they really tried, it was more like the value of the team.
“We were close to scoring once but they were better.
“Yes, we are [too easy to score against] but also in some moments we had some chances to score and didn’t and that also makes a difference.”
