Man Utd fans all saying same thing about Lisandro Martinez after performance vs Newcastle, ‘frightening’ point is made

Manchester United fans did not hold back on Lisandro Martinez after the Red Devils defender’s performance against Newcastle at Old Trafford on Monday evening.

Ruben Amorim is under immense pressure to turn things around at the Red Devils after Manchester United’s recent run of form under him.

The Premier League club have been winless across all competitions since their 2-1 comeback win against Manchester City at the Etihad earlier this month.

United were dumped out of the Carabao Cup at the hands of Tottenham before Bournemouth inflicted a 3-0 Premier League defeat at Old Trafford.

Ruben Amorim then oversaw the Red Devils suffer back-to-back Premier League losses, with Wolves comfortably beating United 2-0 at the Molineux last week.

United went into their final match of 2024 on Monday in 14th place in the Premier League table, with the Red Devils only managing six league wins so far.

Martinez captains Man Utd vs Newcastle

Ruben Amorim handed Lisandro Martinez the captain’s armband for the Premier League clash at Old Trafford after Bruno Fernandes’ suspension.

Martinez has been Amorim’s preferred pick as the left-sided centre-back in the three-man backline, but the Manchester United star has looked a shadow of himself.

The 26-year-old Argentine defender has looked out of place in the backline since Amorim’s arrival from Sporting CP and has seen his form fall off a cliff this season.

Martinez was again exposed during the match against Newcastle and the former Ajax star switched off for the Magpies’ early opener at Old Trafford.

Lewis Hall was found out on the left and the Newcastle full-back was able to pick out an unmarked Alexander Isak in the United box.

Alexander Isak rose to connect with Lewis Hall’s ball and headed past Andre Onana from close range, with Martinez failing to pressure the Newcastle striker.

Martinez’s lacklustre performance came to an end in the 65th minute after Amorim hooked him off and replaced him with United defender Leny Yoro.

Man Utd fans react to Martinez’s performance

United fans were far from forgiving on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, after seeing Martinez’s overall display against Newcastle.

Red Devils supporters sent a clear-cut message that Amorim must make the big call to drop Martinez after his poor run of form in the 2024-25 campaign.

Martinez was slammed for how much he has “regressed” and one United fan was ‘frightened’ by how much the Argentina international has had a “drop-off” in form.

“Lisandro Martinez shouldn’t be starting in this team anymore,” one fan said.

Somebody else commented: “Lisandro Martinez is easily the weak link in the Manchester United back three. Weak mentality, [He’s] physically poor, box-defending generally. He’s a bad defender.”

“Lisandro Martinez has regressed in 12 months. He’s absolutely done,” a third added.

Another posted: “The drop-off from Lisandro Martinez is frightening. He looks a shadow of the player [Man] Utd bought.”

A fifth X user wrote: “Starting to think Lisandro Martinez doesn’t work in a back three and I’m so disappointed.”

Somebody else suggested: “Lisandro Martinez shouldn’t be on the next starting line-up. He’s having a dreadful season. What’s that marking?”

“Lisandro Martinez shouldn’t be playing in this team anymore, he’s finished,” a seven claimed.

While an eight tweeted: “Martinez has to be dropped. [He’s] been awful for 18 months now.”
