Report: One of Man Utd's best U21 talents now tipped to join Ethan Ennis by heading on loan - it depends on one thing

Manchester United are not finished with sending players out on loan this season, now another U21 standout has been tipped to swap Carrington for senior football.

This month has already seen a handful of academy starlets exit Travis Binnion’s side.

Joe Hugill returned to the club from League One Wigan before heading straight back out to Carlisle in League Two in order to secure more game time.

Ethan Williams has also gone out on loan, joining League Two side Cheltenham Town. Here we are excited to see if he can replicate his immense academy form against senior opponents weekly.

The third and final name out on loan is Ethan Ennis, who was the first exit of the window. Ennis joined Doncaster Rovers much to the delight of the Rovers boss Grant McCann.

Several others have been rumoured to be set for loan moves such as Dan Gore and Harry Amass – but now it appears it is Sam Mather who is on Manchester United’s agenda.

Sam Mather tipped for January loan exit

Sending youngsters out on loan in January is typically reserved for the very best prospects at the club. Now according to MEN journalist Steven Railston, Mather is a name joining the list.

The report claims that a loan move could be agreed upon for Mather, however, it will all depend on his fitness.

The 20-year-old only returned from injury at the weekend after being out since November. United want him to build up his fitness and are unwilling to send him out unprepared.

Therefore, a decision over whether Mather will be heading on loan might be put off until closer to deadline day, by which stage the club will have a better idea of where he is fitness-wise.

Mather returned to action last weekend and scored twice against Aston Villa – which should go in his favour as to convincing Ineos he is ready.

Mather has been impressing for Manchester United U21

This season, Mather has scored six times for the U21s while also providing an assist – which is quite impressive considering the amount of time missed.

Last summer, Mather was handed a new contract by United – with his inclusion in United’s pre-season tour of the US a highlight.

Mather also spent part of last season on loan, where he got some valuable senior experience with Rochdale, even being among the goals.

His return to the Premier League 2 last weekend proved he is now above academy football and at his age, he really needs to be playing senior football.

Hopefully, he gets what he needs.
