'After the first few days': PSV left-back competing with Tyrell Malacia says best thing about the Man Utd loanee

Tyrell Malacia has made an instant impact at PSV. The Manchester United left-back joined the Dutch side on loan during the January transfer window.

After United signed Patrick Dorgu from Lecce, Ruben Amorim allowed Malacia to join PSV to get more game time. The 25-year-old’s loan move includes a £8.3 million buy option.

Malacia made his PSV debut during a 1-1 draw against Willem II last weekend and has since been praised by teammates.

Mauro Junior enjoying Tyrell Malacia competition

PSV’s need for Malacia was obvious after Matteo Dams transferred to Al-Hilal in the same window and Sergino Dest continues his recovery from cruciate ligament injury.

The Manchester United loanee put in a good performance on his debut but was left out of Peter Bosz’s starting lineup to face Juventus in the Champions League playoffs on Tuesday night. Mauro Junior was named in the Dutchman’s place.

After PSV’s 2-1 defeat against Juventus, Mauro, who played the full 90 minutes, was asked about the impact Malacia’s arrival has had on his role within the team.

“That is a good question”, the Brazilian told Voetbalprimeur (quoted by PSV Inside). “But we need two left backs, the coach has indicated that.

“I really like Malacia after the first few days. We need players like him, with his mentality, abilities and qualities. It’s always nice to compete with a good player. We have to push each other, and in the end Bosz chooses who will play.”

He added: “I can also play as a right-back or in midfield. The coach sees what is best for the team.”

Buy option could be a bargain

PSV will be rubbing their hands together at the prospect of signing Malacia permanently in the summer for just £8.3 million.

The defender may not be at the level required to compete in the notoriously physical and fast-paced Premier League, but he certainly performs to a high standard in the Dutch top flight.

Malacia’s efforts in a PSV shirt, although still early days, look promising, and his arrival, by his teammate’s own admission, is a welcome addition.
