Report: Jason Wilcox has had enough after Man Utd star's latest howler, Ineos enter race for £24m replacement

If Jason Wilcox was in attendance on Wednesday night at Old Trafford, one position would have become a priority for this summer.

Manchester United got a much-needed victory in the Premier League against Ipswich Town, but it was far from smooth sailing for Ruben Amorim.

After going 1-0 down, United turned the game around with two quickfire set pieces. Matthijs de Ligt scored one while United’s second own goal of 2025 was scored which is more than the total goals by Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund this year.

Ipswich draw level following Patrick Dorgu’s red card for United. However, United scored a winner through Harry Maguire in the second half which moved the Red Devils to 14th in the league.

Despite picking up the win, there were some real negatives for United. One bad part of the team was the performance of Andre Onana who was labelled a ‘calamity’.

The performance was the latest in a bad run, which has now seen United linked with a new No.1.

Manchester United enter race for Joan Garcia

Onana has endured a tough season, making error after error which has left fans frustrated by the Cameroonian goalkeeper.

United have been cost countless points by Onana’s struggles and while no points were dropped against Ipswich, he had another howler.

This may have been the final straw for Jason Wilcox and Christopher Vivell with a replacement now being considered this summer.

According to Spanish outlet Sport, Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia has now emerged as a target for United this summer.

Garcia has become one of Europe’s most sought-after goalkeepers with Barcelona one club showing an interest in signing him.

However, Espanyol are far more willing to sell to an English club – with United joining the race to sign him recently for his £24.7m release clause.

How does Joan Garcia compare with Andre Onana?

If United are to replace Onana, the player that arrives must be the right goalkeeper to take the helm of the goalkeeping position at Old Trafford.

United have had some incredible goalkeepers through the years and whoever Ineos decides right to join the club next must have the ability to be on this list.

Andre Onana vs Joan Garcia League stats 2024/25

Stat Garcia Onana
Games played 25 27
Goals conceded 36 39
Shots on target against 126 110
Saves 92 72
Save completion percentage 73% 67.3%
Goals prevented 4.18 -0.12
Errors led to goal 2 3
Acted as a sweeper 13 8
High claim 36 18

United would be upgrading on Onana with Garcia, at least on paper, however there should be worries over the two having a similar amount of errors leading to goals.

Amorim will be asking for a new goalkeeper this summer considering how many times Onana has let him down. Whether this is Garcia or someone like long-term United target Zion Suzuki remains to be seen.

Perhaps Elyh Harrison may even fancy his chances with the club clearly rating him highly.
