Manchester United and England legend Wayne Rooney has reportedly been linked with a stunning return to management only months after his Plymouth Argyle sacking.
Wayne Rooney was dismissed as Birmingham City manager last January before he took up the head coach role at Plymouth Argyle in May 2024.
However, the 39-year-old former Manchester United and England striker endured a disastrous spell at the Championship strugglers in the 2024-25 campaign.
Former Plymouth boss Rooney only managed four league wins and suffered 13 defeats in 23 Championship matches during his ill-fated spell at Home Park.
The United legend left Plymouth by mutual agreement before the end of 2024 and the Pilgrims were bottom of the Championship at the time of his exit.

Rooney’s next managerial role?
Wayne Rooney’s chapter at Plymouth Argyle is only the latest setback of his managerial career, following his ill-fated run at Birmingham City.
Despite his sacking from Plymouth, the former Manchester United captain has refused to walk away from management and is keen to return to the dugout.
Since his exit from the Pilgrims, Rooney has returned to the media spotlight as a pundit and the England hero has been linked with different punditry roles.
The Sun now reports that the former Birmingham and Plymouth boss could be ready to make his return to management and one club has now been linked with him.
The newspaper cited Heat World as a source and the magazine’s ‘insider’ claimed that there has been ‘talk’ of Rooney getting the head coach at Salford City.
“There’s talk of Wayne getting another managerial role at Salford City FC,” an unnamed source told Heat World.
“It’s local, so he doesn’t have to move out, but he won’t be home 24/7 and will have something to focus on.”
Rooney at Salford City with Man Utd legends?
Salford City are currently ninth in the League Two table and could miss out on challenging for a place in League One amid their current campaign.
According to The Sun, Salford ‘could be on the search for a new manager’ if their bid to reach League One for the 2025-26 campaign fails to manifest.
Karl Robinson has been Salford manager since 2024 and could still lead the Ammies to a potential play-off spot before the season is out.
Rooney’s potential arrival at Moor Lane as Salford boss would see him cross paths with several United legends, including his former club teammates.
Salford has been owned by key members of the famed ‘Class of ‘92’ after a successful takeover bid of the club in 2014.
Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt were part of the Class of ‘92 members who initially took part in the purchase of Salford.
Fellow Class of ’92 star and United legend David Beckham later captured a minority stake in the Ammies in 2019.
